About Time

If someone asked me "what would you do if you had super powers?", I think I would have said "control the time".

I used to be scared of how fast time would just pass by. Especially during the weekends.

You finish work on a Friday night feeling like a boss, but the next thing you realize it's 6PM on a Sunday night and you feel like shit.

----------Where the hell did my weekend go?

But ever since quarantine started, you realize you have the power to control your time.

You don't have to wake up early to catch the 9 o'clock bus.

You don't have to run to the station to get on the fastest train.

You don't have to eat lunch around twelve.

You don't have to pretend to work when you don't have anything to do. etc...

We were suddenly given the freedom to control our time which I feel like most of us haven't had ever since we started working.

So... basically my dreams came true. I got more time.

At first I took so much advantage of this situation.

I stayed up till 3AM everyday, woke up at 11AM (or 12...), and even watched a movie during working hours. I felt bored for the first time in years. The day went by slow. It felt good.

But you know, after a few weeks my inner "guilty samurai" got so worried and I felt so wrong about having so much freedom. I didn't know I would get so worried once I was given the time I thought I would never get.

When you think about it, it's so weird how we feel bad about being able to control our time.

Maybe it's a Japanese culture thing. I feel like we are somehow framed to think "my time" doesn't exist during weekdays because work is based on "everyone's time". We share the same "time" by being in the office together and we HAVE TO share the same time. Maybe this is why so many Japanese people feel reluctant to use their paid day-offs. (Including me)

But this quarantine period made me think we all have the right to control our time the way we want. We shouldn't feel bad about it because it's your own time.

We can't change the fact that one day is 24 hours.

But we do have the power to make the day go fast or slow.

It's up to us and we shouldn't let any one else take away our time.
